  1. Both Johnny and Tommy now have fully licensed Softaculous available to everyone to install the latest version of 459 different software packages with just a single click. If you're not familiar with Softaculous it automates the installation of most popular software with the latest version, and can help you easily stay up to date as well. Since we offer free hosting we attract a lot of people who are new to web hosting, and installing some software can be very confusing if you don't know what you're doing. With Softaculous you just pick the software, enter a few variables, and click install. When we switched control panels we canceled our Softaculous subscription because Plesk comes with a built in software installer, but after using it for a few years we found it to have very out of date software, and not very many options. We recently reached out to Softaculous and they agreed to give us a non-profit discount to help us fulfill our mission to provide high quality, free or low cost hosting options to students, small businesses, and anyone who can't afford paid hosting. We hope you enjoy it. Let us know how it works for you if you test it out.

  2. Everyone please welcome the newest addition to our HelioHost staff, KazVee! A question that we get a lot is how to get promoted to admin. You need to do exactly what KazVee did by helping out on the forums and Discord with simple questions that don't require admin access. Since she continued helping out we took notice and offered to give her access to the admin tools so she can help out even more. Since we switched to Plesk control panel in 2021 a lot of our documentation on the wiki became extremely out of date. KazVee took it upon herself to completely overhaul and update our documentation which benefits all of our users. We've been asking our users to help out with the wiki for years, and KazVee was the one who finally stepped up and volunteered to take care of it. Here at HelioHost we all started as regular users helping out like KazVee, and eventually got promoted.

  3. Even after opening free signups twice per day, instead of once per day like the last 19 years, free accounts are still filling consistently in only a few seconds in both time slots. Since the stability of Johnny is still doing great so we're going to increase the number of accounts we give away each day. As long as the uptime and speed of Johnny stays good we'll continue trying to give away as many accounts as we can support each day.

  4. Free signups on Johnny now reset every 12 hours at midnight UTC and noon UTC. For the last 8 years we've been offering new free signups starting at midnight UTC and staying open as long as we can, but also not allowing too many accounts to keep the uptime high. This works great for most of the world. For instance, signups reset at 4pm to 8pm in the US, 10pm in Brazil, 12am in England, 1am in France, 1am in Germany, 2pm in Hawaii, 7pm in Peru, 1pm in New Zealand, 8am to 11am in Australia, 9am in Japan, 8am in China, 5:30am in India, etc. However, between India and Germany not many people are awake when signups open. We get a lot of complaints from people living in those areas, and our responses have always been, "I had to stay up until 2am three nights in a row to get my account", or "I had to stay up until 3am to get my account", or "You could just donate $1 and get an account whenever", or "You're lucky because there wasn't even an option to donate back in the day when I got my account". Johnny has been really stable the last year since we started offering free signups again, and we feel like we can increase the number of new accounts that we give out each day. Instead of increasing the number of accounts available at midnight UTC we instead decided to offer signups twice per day to help out those people who don't want to set an alarm and wake up at 4am just to get a free hosting account. Let us know what you think of this change.

  5. We have received quite a few false positive malware reports for our website. The reason is because of the Arc.io CDN that we've been using for the last few years. When we started using it we were getting about $500 per year which is a great source of income for a non-profit, and the little blue dot in the bottom left corner was no where near as annoying as regular ads. In the last year we've made less than $15 from it though, and most antivirus programs and malware programs now report the CDN as malware. We've decided that it is no longer worth it. We can probably get more than $15 per year from donations from people who would have otherwise avoided our website due to the false malware report. There is no way to know how many people have found our website, but decided to use a different hosting provider because of this issue. We've contacted the antivirus and malware detection companies plenty of times, but they won't fix the issue on their end. One of our VPS customers can't even pay for his VPS because his computer refuses to even open our payment page, and he can't figure out how to turn off his antivirus or whitelist our website. Thanks for all the money over the years, Arc.io, but the time has come to move on. If you use an antivirus or malware product that reports our website is bad please submit another false positive report for us now that Arc.io is gone, and hopefully we can get this mess cleaned up together. Thanks!

  9. A huge thank you goes out to the anonymous donor who just gave $243 to finish the fundraiser today! We couldn't have gotten our fundraiser to 100% without the 78 other donors so thanks to you all as well. We just purchased the new server and it will be delivered to our datacenter in a few days. Ashoat is going to be visiting the datacenter to install the new server in our cabinet later this month. Once we have the new server physically installed we can begin installing Plesk and all the other software. Everyone who donated $30 or more will then be given early beta access to the new server with no high load suspensions and no inactivity suspensions.

  10. Each user can now open a maximum of 10 connections to MariaDB on Johnny and Tommy. Back in 2021 and earlier we had a limit of 3 connections on Johnny and 6 connections on Tommy. Tons of people would write bad code that doesn't ever close database connections and then they would hit the limit and complain to us about the errors. The forum and Discord were full of messages like, "The reason you can't open any new connections is because you already have 6 open connections that have all been sleeping for hours without even doing anything." When we switched to Plesk we decided to do an experiment and leave the connections unlimited to see if people could be responsible and not abuse our generosity. It worked well for 3 years, but in the last 2 weeks one person on Tommy and three people on Johnny have (probably unintentionally) launched a denial of service attack on our MariaDB databases causing hours of downtime for thousands of other users. So, the time has come to enforce a limit again. A few bad people always ruin the fun for everyone else.

  11. Password resets are now available without admin assistance through the website at https://heliohost.org/reset/ If you forget the password for your Johnny, Tommy, or VPS account this site should allow you to set a new password after verifying your email address. For the last few years any password reset had to be emailed manually by an admin, which was a lot of work for us, and a hassle for our users. Let us know if you run into any errors while resetting your password.

  12. We've simplified the signup page a bit. There were a lot of old cPanel servers and unavailable servers listed that had a tendency to confuse people. The signup page hasn't been updated since 2021 so it was overdue for an overhaul. Since the Morty fundraiser was a success, we bought the new server, we're working on getting Morty ready to go, and hope to get him released soon we've left him on the signup page. We also listed the 10 domain limit, 100 GB memory limit, and 10k CPU limit up front on Johnny and Tommy so people understand ahead of time that they can get suspended for causing too much load. We also plan on adding a more detailed table view on the signups page so people can compare all of our servers in great depth if they want to. Let us know what you think of the new changes.

  13. Last night one of our servers locked up, and needed to be restarted. After the reboot the filesystem needed to be scanned for errors. It's an 8 TB raid array so it's taking a while to complete the scan. In the meantime several VPS are offline entirely. Also it's possible that if your VPS is working now and you try to reboot it, it won't boot up again on its own. Our backup system is also offline temporarily so you won't be able to download your full backups until the filesystem finishes scanning. The filesystem scan doesn't have a progress bar so we're not entirely sure how long it will take to get everything back online. We'll make a news post when everything is working again.

  14. Did you create an A record called webmail? If your t goal is to make webmail.papale.my.id work, you need to create that record. The value is the same IP address as the main A record. Once you create it, you might also want to re-issue your SSL certificate in order to have the webmail subdomain included.

  15. That account was actually on the old cpanel Johnny, but the result is the same. It's not suspended, it was deleted. An invite for a replacement johnny account has been sent to you.

  17. The main reason we haven't gotten any of this simple self-service stuff done is we've been trying to get all of the cPanel accounts moved over, and we didn't have anywhere to put them. We figured having a control panel at all, even if it wasn't fully functional with stuff like adding/removing domains, was better than just leaving people's websites on a broken cPanel server with no control panel at all. We actually just finished sending transfer invites out about a week ago. So, the choice last year when we started transferring people was: Wait another couple months with everyone on a broken cPanel server while we tested the domain adding and removing, and DNS functions. Start transferring people so they have access to a partially done Plesk control panel, and then when we got everyone transferred over we could work on things like adding/removing domains. The plan was to set up Tommy, start moving people over, and then test the domain adding/removing on Johnny. Before we got that fully tested we realized that Tommy was full, and we didn't want to stop the transfer process again, so we just started putting people on Johnny for the same reason as the logic above. Having a partially functional control panel is better than no control panel at all. So my point is, a new server does help because we need space for all these people, and we need space to create a test server where we can debug the domain adding/removing. We can't develop this software on a production server with thousands of people because if there was a bug that allowed people to edit other people's DNS zones, etc it would be very bad.

  18. Account unsuspended (may take a few minutes to begin working again). I've escalated your request, so an administrator can answer your question about retrieving data from your other account.

  19. Space increases are not free and are only available to donors who've donated $5 or more ($6 or more for Tommy users, as the first $1 gives you the Tommy account). To increase space, please provide a transaction number for a donation of $5 or more. Each $5 donated entitles you to 1000MB extra space, with a max of 6000MB for any one person on the shared hosting. (Space beyond 6000MB can be obtained by purchasing a VPS).

  20. I spoke with Krydos on this, he confirmed this issue does not look to be on our end, but rather an issue with DNS propagation of the name server settings from in.eu.org. He was able to show that some servers around the world are reporting cloudns as the DNS provider, which is obviously incorrect. You'll need to contact the admins who handle in.eu.org for assistance with this issue (note that in.eu.org has a different admin from eu.org).

  25. That account's renewal failed (probably due to load if I had to guess). Krydos will need to take a look at it as it did not remove the inactivity page from your account and you can't log in even though the account system shows it as active. There's also no log entry showing it renewing...

  27. Also since you are using cloudflare, make sure you set the A record to 65.19.141.67 and the AAAA record to 2001:470:1:1ee::2009

  28. We updated some dependencies on our main website last night and apparently it broke our signup process. People would all get stuck on the domain picking screen and couldn't get any further. This issue should be fixed now. If you are one of the few people affected by this issue click the validation link in your email and continue the signup process and it should work now. Let us know if you're still having any issues signing up.

  29. Yes SPF and DKIM can be fixed for any domain since they’re just DNS entries, but the fact that that the domain ends in .space is in itself a problem (major providers have blacklisted a lot of these “vanity” TLDs like .space, .zip, .page, .xyz, etc. because that are prone to abuse). That can’t be fixed without buying a different domain that doesn’t end in one of those.

  30. The webmail subdomain doesn't work because your DNS is incorrect. Since you use external DNS, make sure there is only a single A record called "webmail", and that it's pointed to 65.19.141.77. In addition, for the root domain ppblk.space, you'll need to delete the A record with the IP of 66.96.162.48 for the site to work properly. As for the additional subdomains, there is still something wrong that prevents them from being added at this time. Krydos is going to look into it again.

  34. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC has been set up for the domain luan.eng.br. I recommend sending a test email to https://www.mail-tester.com/ to make sure everything is configured correctly. If you get less than a 10/10 please post the link to the full report so we can fix any other issues that there may be. How are you sending the emails? Mail client? PHP software on the server? Roundcube webmail client? Paper and ink?

  40. The domain has been added, but in order to actually host it with us you must do 1 of the following 2 options. Use our nameservers by logging in to your registrar and setting your NS records to ns1.heliohost.org and ns2.heliohost.org Use any external DNS that you want, Cloudflare is a popular free option, and create an A record with the value 65.19.141.67 and an AAAA record with the value 2001:470:1:1ee::2009

  43. For anyone interested, here's a zip file with Krydos' Flask example: https://kairion.helioho.st/flasktest.zip Just download it and extract on httpdocs (Plesk's new account) or public_html (cPanel's transferred account), open flask.wsgi (which is inside the directory flasktest that'll be created when extracting the downloaded zip file) and find: sys.path.append("/home/YOUR_DOMAIN_HERE/httpdocs/flasktest"); And change YOUR_DOMAIN_HERE with your actual domain, e.g.: sys.path.append("/home/kairion.helioho.st/httpdocs/flasktest"); And then you can access your Flask example: https://kairion.helioho.st/flasktest/ @krsmith28p Here's a zip file with Krydos' Flask example adapted to run on web root (httpdocs for Plesk's new account or public_html for cPanel's transferred account): https://kairion.helioho.st/flasktest_on_webroot.zip Just extract it on your web root (as indicated above), remove all index files that it may have (index.html, index.htm, index.php etc.), open the file flask.wsgi and find: sys.path.append("/home/YOUR_DOMAIN_HERE/httpdocs"); And change YOUR_DOMAIN_HERE with your actual domain, e.g.: sys.path.append("/home/kairion.helioho.st/httpdocs"); It will work the same way as Krydos' original example. You can read these three files and check the differences between them and Krydos' originals. It's actually really easy: I just found all references for "flasktest" (the directory we make in the original example) and removed them (or changed them to a simple "/"). I'm not a Python/Django/Flask expert, but feel free to ask any questions and if I can help, I'll be glad to.
