  1. I'm Alonessix, but please, call me Alone or Alon. Homeschooled, going into what would be high school for a public schooled person (please don't think less of me for being young). I'm very interested in writing stories (finished an entire book, in fact!), making websites and games, and roleplaying. Other interests of mine include acting (usually Shakespearean--especially Hamlet), art, and gaming. I absolutely *love* Ruby and Ruby on Rails, as well as JavaScript. I have experience in a lot of programming languages. I plan on learning Latin soon. I can be arrogant and blunt some of the time. I'm a huuuuge fantasy fan--LOTR is a great book, and it's kind of what got me into writing all these fantasy epics. Haha. I *despise* the Hunger Games movies. For favorite movies, I'd have to say The Lego Movie. But usually I'm a book lover. Anyway, I think that's all. A shoutout to DjBob (or whatever you call him O.o) for making this whole thing free! I'm hoping it'll be good. I haven't really finished my Rails app yet, so I can't really say much about Heliohost. I'm going to try all the features it offers--unfortunately, you can't find most of these things on free hosting.
  2. I personally think that libraries have their uses -- they're useful (see what I did there? ) in some cases but most the time what you're trying to do can easily be accomplished without it. For example, some people haven't a clue how to do DOM manipulation without jQuery; that causes them to rely on it and suffer the consequences of loading what they don't need as well as what they do. The main reason I don't like using libraries (external ones, that is) is because they give wayyyy too many features that I *don't* need, and sometimes what they do can be done with pure CSS. Your thoughts?
  3. Could've sworn that the signup page said you can use C++ and C CGI...hmm. I've been trying to get a C++ CGI file to work but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm probably doing something wrong Not even sure if you compile a C++ file when you're using it as CGI. I do understand your reasoning...but I don't want to be going back and forth in a 'Ruby's syntax is better!' 'no, PHP!' 'Ruby rules!'. Haha anyway, thanks for explaining it a bit more.
  4. I'm making a Rails app, using Rails 4...only to find that Heliohost offers Rails 2. When will you (or will you) be upgrading? I'm not quite sure if I'll get bugs and broken pages when hosting a Rails 4 website on here. I'm hoping I'll be fine with 2...but I'm not sure. Is there some reason you haven't yet gone to v4? think I read something about cPanel not supporting anything past Rails 2, but I'm not sure. Also: if there is no upgrade planned, could someone tell me/link me to a list of the differences between Rails 4 and Rails 2?
  5. After reading this thread again I see the most popular choice is most definitely PHP. For all the people who posted, you should give the other languages a chance. I think you'll like them It's odd to me that you three think PHP is the best -- I don't think it's easy to understand a'tall. Of course, I guess you might think differently in terms of coding...still, you should try Ruby if you've not already. It's *amazing* (as I said before).
  6. Another clarification: will my account still be suspended even if I take action against the content that the offending user submitted? For example, if someone was on a forum and they spammed the place w/ porn but I cleaned it up as quickly as possible, would I still get banned from Heliohost?
  7. Alone here again. I'm working on a system that lets users submit content. The Terms of Service states that "everything displayed on your site will be your property". However, I'm not sure what exactly this entails -- it seems vague. I want to be able to let my users submit their own plotlines, pseudocode, and possibly images for a game creator I'm making. Is this allowed without taking my users' rights to the stories and things they create away? or does it qualify as a break of the ToS? I'm confused here. Thanks!
  8. I would have to say Ruby. I haven't tried ASP.NET or Perl yet, but I'd like to. Ruby's syntax, to me, is...amazing. Not only is it readable, it's also very clear as to what is happening with the code (most the time). Shoutout to Heliohost for finally giving me a place where I can use it. You can do a lot of things with Ruby from what I've seen -- Twitter is built on RoR, as well as Github (I believe). Of course, Facebook was coded with PHP, and Google+ was made with Python (pretty sure) so...well, I suppose all the server-side languages have their advantages. I don't like PHP as much as Python or Ruby. It seems kind of hard to work with to me, which is strange because I *really* like the C family of languages. If I could find a place to use Node, I'd be all over it. Too bad Heliohost doesn't support it. I suppose there's enough going on here already though.
  9. Hello there, I've got a problem. I'm trying to use a Dot.Tk domain with my site. However, this isn't working -- I'm getting an error saying it's an invalid hostname. I'm wondering 1) how to fix this, and 2) if this has happened to anyone else. Included is a link to a picture of the error. I don't know what could be causing this...with my experience on other free hosts, there hasn't been a problem at all with nameservers. http://tinypic.com/r/14l1xjl/8 Thanks for reading, Alone
