Well, i have tried almost every free domain option and a had seen sadly how every one goes down on google and even stop existing or become useless. Dot.tk was one of them, i really love that service that worked for me for years where i could register unlimited .tk domains, the website was kinda simple and forgotten but it worked like a charm. Now, since Freenom has taken control of dot.tk, it all became garbage. The domain i had registered for years and used as a personal blog page got taken down without any warning and when i asked to support what happened all they could tell me is that they offer cheap domains, like if it was just an autoresponder. I tried registering a new domain again, got it and it lasted a week, after that they took it down again without warning. i had a joomla proyect there so i didn't infringed anything.

Don't use freenom, they turned the great dot.tk who offered uninterested .tk domains into a money hungry company.

They cancelled a domain of mine back in 2014 for no reason...not surprising. Took me 2 years of constantly trying to reach them to find out why it wouldn't let me re-register it. They fixed that, then banned my account the same day for abuse despite having zero domains registered (and of course, were of no help when I asked why, just pointed to an FAQ saying what I already knew).

Did get the domain back eventually...2.5 years later (lost in June 2014, got it back Dec 2016). :o Needed it since I have PCs across the country with software that expected to find my site there. Once they connected again, updates immediately got shipped to reconfigure them to my .com.

I hate Freenom.

I bought a .com back in 2014 when i lost that .tk, so I have a domain...was on a road trip at the time and seeing it needed to be fixed asap, i had to buy it, set it up, and reconfigure a whole boatload of things using only an iPad and Bluetooth keyboard on free wifi at hotels and coffee shops...I still hate freenom for that.

Do I actually qualify for the free domain promo? I was under the impression that being an admin meant I didn't (kind of like how employees of a company holding a contest can't enter). Because if I can, I have almost 10 years worth sitting there and I easily make 400 posts a year.

Yes you still qualify. Just PM me the details that are needed for the Free Domain Request and I'll see that you get a domain: http://www.helionet.org/index/forum/73-free-domain-requests/

I had a similar experience with my krydos.tk domain. I've never really hosted anything there. It's just said "Blank." like that for like six years now, but out of nowhere they yanked it out of my control and put a bunch of like porn spam ads and stuff on whomever might type in my domain. When I logged in to the control panel it said that my domain was too active for a free domain or something, and they needed to charge me $20 USD a year to keep it. Eventually they gave up trying to scam me out of money because I just ignored them, and (unlike wolstech) I was able to just edit all the references to krydos.tk there were in the world and change them all to krydos.heliohost.org. Then when they were done trying to extort me I registered krydos.tk for free again a few months later. THEN! (as if that wasn't enough already.) They flagged my whole freenom account as suspicious or a hacker or a bot or something. They never would tell me what the problem was exactly, and said I could never have my account back. Ok... So I created a new account and registered krydos.tk on the new one. It's just all really bizarre. Not worth the effort.

Also, I've apparently earned myself 26.5 years of free domains. Yay!

Though this topic is 4 years old, some of the free domain providers still work. And I'm glad as I'm a newbie to all this. I want to build a website using a wordpress theme (https://www.templatemonster.com/category/hotels/) in order to improve my skills. So, I don't have any desire to pay for everything :) In my opinion, everything comes with practice, that's why I've chosen this way to a web designer career.
