[Answered] Use Heliohost Account With Own Domain On Own Nameserver?

Hi!

I want to use my account ra75.heliohost.org with my own domain but I don't want to delegate my domain to your nameservers as I need features you don't provide with your dns.

So: Is it possible to make a CNAME or A resource record in my own DNS service to point to your servers, which then serve my webpages?

Also if that works, may I use a SSL certificate for my own domains which are not hosted on your dns system (of course after I purchased an IP)?

Thanks for support in advance,

Dan

Yes it is possible. There are two ways to do this:

First (quick method):

  1. Change your main domain to your domain hosted with your own DNS using the script http://heliohost.org/home/support/scripts/domain
  2. Set an A record to the IP of your account (found in the Stats column on the cPanel main page, under Shared IP)
  3. Wait for propagation (~24-48 hours) and voila!

***NOTE: By changing your main domain, you lose your heliohost.org subdomain. To prevent this, use the second method.

Second method:

  1. Temporarily set your domain's nameservers to ns1.heliohost.org and ns2.heliohost.org
  2. Add your domain as a parked or addon domain in cPanel
  3. Once the domain is parked or added successfully, you may change domain delegation back to your own DNS
  4. Set an A record to the IP of your account (found in the Stats column on the cPanel main page, under Shared IP)

If everything goes well, your domain should be up and running. Please remember that using either method, you will receive the account queued page for the first 24-48 hours.

Hi there, Just to update this in case someone finds it on Google the way I did: The server IP info has been moved in the current (6/2017) version of CPanel. Look on the right side under "General Information" and then click "Server Information" near the bottom. You should see an IP address in line with "Shared IP Address." If I'm right, that's the one you want to make an A record for.

Caveat: I only just did this and it's not yet working for my domain, but I'm assuming that it needs more time to propagate.

It is worth adding to this that though this usually works, we do not provide support for this configuration and cPanel doesn't officially support it either. We cannot guarantee that these configurations will work or continue to work. If you request support, you may be asked to change your domains nameservers to ours before we provide support so we can eliminate issues on the external DNS server as the cause of your problem.

If you need additional DNS functionality, CloudFlare with a "Full Zone" set up may be a suitable solution instead. This can be configured through the cPanel plugin for CloudFlare. Once configured, you can access the CloudFlare website for additional settings. Nearly all record types are supported except for CAA, which is not widely adopted at this time.
