Stevie Is Down Again :(

Some recent developments with Stevie lead me to think we're probably looking at months before he's fixed.

I'd recommend moving to the new Johnny (limited signups that reset daily at midnight UTC) or donating for a Tommy invite (make sure to donate using an email address that's not already used by a Stevie account).

Where does one sign up on Johnny?

Do steps have to be taken to delete the Stevie account?

As for the continual solicitations for "donations" to get a "Tommy invite", I don't see how it is consistent with the following (and when Tommy inevitably has problems ....)

  • We won’t ask you for payment information and we won’t try to upsell you to any paid plans. Our service is completely free and will always be completely free.

Let us know your username, and domain(s) you want to use on your new account.

First of all Eddie (which hosts Cody and Tommy) cost us a LOT of money. The only way we earn any money is from ad revenue or donations. We don't have any paid plans to earn money from, and the people who keep Heliohost running are volunteers. Tommy isn't technically ready for the onslaught of free accounts, but we needed some people to help test him out. Since he uses completely different software than our other servers we're having to adapt and rewrite a lot of our custom scripts to work with him which inevitably unearths bugs. One such bug arose last night which deleted two accounts, so obviously it's a good thing there isn't hundreds of account being created each day because it could have been a lot worse. We have given out quite a few FREE beta invites for Tommy to test out various aspects of his software, but we wanted to do something nice for our donors to show our appreciation and give them back something special for helping keep Heliohost afloat. We decided that allowing them to create accounts on Tommy early would be a nice gesture plus it would give us more test cases to make sure Tommy is fully functional for everyone when we release him publicly.

Here's the main thing though, people have gotten a Tommy invite for as little as a dollar, or as much as one very generous donor who gave us over $100. That's not the same thing as a paid plan that requires a monthly payment. These Tommy beta accounts can be used forever too for the one time donation. If you don't want to or can't donate even a dollar you have three options to get a Tommy account: Just wait and hope you get a free invite. Wait until he's publicly released and free for everyone. Be really helpful to other users and get promoted to a volunteer admin which allows you to create a Tommy account.

The other thing is as soon as Stevie started having issues we all worked extra long volunteer hours to get Johnny functional again so that people could have a completely free option to use. We don't want to be a paid host, and we will never be a paid host, but we do need donations to continue operation and it doesn't hurt to give people a small reward for their generosity.
