Cores

I don't find buying quad cores worth the money. We can barely take full advantage of dual cores, and here we are getting ahead of ourselves stuffing more onto a chip (or motherboard with multiple sockets). Of course, they can't help but advance technology anyway.

Performance increase varies depending on the task, as I've seen a number of benchmarks swaying both ways. If the price difference is negligible, go for it, but otherwise don't bother. It also largely depends on what you have. If you have an Intel dual core, depending on the model you should be set for some time.

I believe dual-cores overclock better than their quad-core counterparts at this point (which doesn't necessarily mean they are better - it depends what you want to use them for). Also, yes, performance depends largely on the task being performed.
