I believe this goes here.

 

I'm working on a project, and i'm looking for differing views on the subject.

 

How doing marketing and advertisements will grow in the future?

 

for instance, here we have a company like Google, basically the largest advertising company in the world, yet also becoming a major provider of...EVERYTHING! We know they're gathering data through all this 'to provide the best advertising experience to the consumer' meaning perhaps, getting only advertisements you want to see, or likely buy.

 

They'll take all these mounds of data though the internet, OS use, TV use, phone use, and many other things now and as the company goes larger. Perhaps only to give you advertisements you want to see all the time.

 

Is this what we want and need?

 

Or is it counter productive in a sense? Seeing only what you want might give you no/little chance to want something new. Maybe the flood of awesome things you want gets you cave in and charge up one to many credit cards?

Marketing and advertising are growing advancing every day that technology does. When there's a new coding language, someone out there is trying to figure out how to put some ad on there for some ungodly thing made in china instead of the good ole USA. Computer companies the like are trying to get more information about their users sot hey can create better computers for a more select crowd, instead of throwing out a big ole black box like they did in the old days. An example of this is the simple design of the laptop. When i walk into walmart there are many designs and about 2 categories of laptops (That i would personally place them in). There's simple computing laptops, and then there's the more sophisticated gaming or powerhouse laptops for the gamer/developer/etc... But if you look at the design, some are meant for the women in the country, (maybe some men), that have flowers on them, and are extremely colorful. On the other hand, there are other laptops that have red and black and look "mean".

 

Advertising is now getting to new lengths as well. From the upgrade of billboards to the boards that change every so often, and even upgraded to water-proof tv's (basically). When i bought my Iphone, i never thought i would have to look and see stupid adds on apps that i use everyday. Well, guess who was wrong? Depending on the app, the add is made (and will change every so often) to fit the type of crowd that downloaded or bought that app.

 

I think some of this could lead us all into a bad place. Large companies are trying to get more information on their consumers to make newer products. After thinking about this, then think "How are they gonna get all this data?". Well, with the World Wide Web growing bigger every day, you never know who is watching all of you moves throughout it. These companies could be sending out some kind of virus, spyware, etc... to collect data on their consumer. If you think about it, how can you stop them? Viruses are a regular thing, and if someone got one, who's gonna delve into the fragile code and say "WHO MADE THIS?!". They'll just get rid of it and move on, especially the common and older crowd using computers.

You know that Chinese have their sites hosted here and that some of them would consider that highly offensive.

To be honest, advertising will most likely follow the natural course of economics. The reason that advertising exists is because the capitalistic economy has incentives for such (I'm not saying that capitalism is good or bad).

 

Start with the example of Google. It had started as a college project for a person. He saw the incentive of making money by allowing advertisements to be placed on the search engine.

 

Likewise, if those advertising companies see that it would be in their benefit to make more targeted ads (it's ads, not adds), then they'll do it. If they think that advertising only certain products to certain people will reap them more money than otherwise, then they'll do it. That's the system of incentives.

 

If people respond poorly to the targeted ads, then the companies will, of course, stop making them. Most likely, though, they won't, and they'll get more and more focused to make the companies more and more money.
