[Solved] Help please : petem - no Cpanel login and my domain not found

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

My Heliohost user name is petem and my root domain is icefactory.heliohost.org

I don't think my account has been suspended .. I believe it is less than a month since my last Cpanel login.

When I tried to login today my password refused to work and after a few attempts I was told there had been a brute force attempt.

After waiting several minutes I tried again and still no luck - so I requested a password reset - but i have not received that email.

Meanwhile my domain - icefactory.heliohost.org raises a domain not found error . ..

Please help me resolve this - I'm anxious to avoid my account being suspended, and I have recently started inviting people to look at my work in progress, so it is embarrassing if the site is not visible . .

Thank you i anticipation of your help, and thanks for the great Heliohost service.

looking forward to hearing from you. all the best,

Pete.

P.S. Before posting this message I have jjust repeated the process, so as to be sure it was not just a transient problem. All is the same- cpanel login failed, password reset email not received and domain not found.

Thanks o.r your note - I shall endeavour to be more precise in future - once I have recontstructed my sites !

As it was i did not think my account had been suspended,, but from Byron's reply I realise thsat is indeed the case .

I'm sorry but it looks like your site has been deleted for failure to login every 30 days. I hope you kept a backup so you can re-create your site over again.

Hello Byron - many thanks for getting back to me so quickly. . .

I guess it must have been more than a month then - though I had tried to log in regularly I'm travelling at the moment and it's not always possible. .

I have indeed got backups, so it should be possible to recontstruct things . . .minus a few most recent blog posts. .

However I had created a fairly complex arrangement of subdomains and redirections.. so just having the files on my local machine will not be all I need .. .

I wonder. . is there any chance of rescuing my stuff ? No doubt you keep your own backups...

I shall not start to recreate things until you confirm that it has indeed all been irretrievably destroyed . .

Once again thanks . .both for your prompt reply and for the excellent service offered by Heliohost.

BTW. .on my site i had created 3 separate Drupal instances each sharing the same code base. . .perhaps somethnig similar might be appropriate for Heliohost . .no doubt there are many users who employ such CMS systems and there must be a llot of duplicated effort and materlals. . .

P.S. I wonder if you could set things up to send out a warning to the user's mail a few days before the deletion of their materials. .

While travelling Internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, but I do manage to check email once a week or so .. . .

Perhaps there are other users who might benefit from this and avoid getting caugth out . .

If I do have to start from scatch . .should I just recreate my user name and porceed from there, ,or. . . ?

That's great news! I always cringe when things get deleted permanently.

Nope, it's all 100% gone with no hope of recovery.

Thanks from all of us.

We do. One week before your account gets permanently deleted you get an email and your site changes to the suspension message. Perhaps your email provider sent the warning email to the junk box? Also some email providers have been known to delete heliohost emails without even putting them in the junk mail box. I have had good luck with my hotmail account but other users have reported this.

Sorry, but we don't have the space to keep backups of user's sites, meaning that all terminated accounts have to be permanently deleted and destroyed. You can imagine the chaos we would have if we were backing up 1800 accounts, and this would seriously downgrade the performance. We also need to make room for newer, active accounts.

You can go ahead and create a new account whenever you like. :)

Hello again . . .

I've dived in and created a new account on your Johnny server . . . now I'll just have to wait for the Cpanel a/c and site to go live . .

Meanwhile I'll peruse my backups and prepare for a massive upload !

That's great news! I always cringe when things get deleted permanently.

We do( send a warning email). One week before your account gets permanently deleted you get an email...

Oh yes .. close inspection of my Inbox revealed your warning message .. . unfortunately it arrived just as I went to a fairly remote region in Georgia and I didn't get online again in time, and I had not been able to access the Internet from my own computer with its CPanel bookmarks for some time previously...So it goes..

Too bad that it's all gone, but backups and some graft to recreate the subdomains and such should get me back on course..

Sorry, but we don't have the space to keep backups of user's sites,...

Point taken about the impossibility of your keeping backups of user stuff . . and the space requirements that would entail.

I had been thinking mostly of the routing stuff I'd set up . . I had imagined, perhaps wrongly, that such information might be stored independently of actual user content.

Perhaps there are files within my user space that contain this configuration information that I could backup.

Any advice about this would be appreciated . . .

Given the complexity of the sites I had created and intend to re-create I was already nearing full capacity before this little disaster, even before creating much actual content and inviting users to contribute..

Drupal and Movable Type plus their respective extensions are rather space-hungry. .

I wonder if there is any possibility of extending storage limits ?

The graft process will no doubt make me yearn( again) for SSH for command line access -

and perhaps drive me into the hands of commercial providers - though I hope not.

I would like to use SSH for unning perl and DRUSH scripts, creating symlinks, and general file management, And now specifically for the recreation of subdmains and URL aliasing, though I don't know the ins and outs of this.

In any event it shoulld be easier to recreate, as my orignal scheme had evolved over a period of months as I got clearer about what I wanted to achieve and how to set up the appropriate routings . .

Incidentally I've made a lens at http://www.squidoo.com/heliohost and I'll be telling the story of my disaster and recovery process there . .

Thanks again for your prompt replies and the great service Heliohost provides. . .

All the best,

Pete

P.S. I wonder if there is a place on the forum for users to compare notes and show off their efforts ?

It would be good to browse the range of stuff put up on Heliohost.

We do not offer SSH access to our users because of security risks. In order to offer SSH we would need to carry out lots and lots of security audits and patch up lots of holes. We do not want a repeat of the hacking of Johnny.
