#165418 Transfer Complete

Posted by HelioHost on 05 October 2019 - 11:34 PM

All of the accounts that were on Tommy when he crashed have now been transferred back, or invited to create a new account. If you haven't received your invite, or if your account wasn't automatically transferred please let us know now by creating a new topic in the customer support forum.

#164460 Tommy Is Back!

Posted by HelioHost on 20 September 2019 - 01:08 AM

Tommy has been rebuilt and we are already in the process of transferring the first accounts to him.

We will be going down the list of all of the accounts that were on Tommy when he crashed, and either sending an invite to the email address, or if the email address is already in use on Johnny or Ricky that account will be moved to Tommy. Obviously we can't move thousands of accounts in a single day so we will be working our way down a list that is more or less sorted by donation amount. This means that if you donated a relatively large amount you will be among the first to get back on Tommy. The list has been randomized somewhat though to be as fair as possible. It will likely take a few weeks to get everyone moved or invited back onto Tommy though so please continue to be patient. If your email address is on our list and you created a new account on Ricky or Johnny, but you don't want for whatever reason to be moved back to Tommy just let us know and we'll remove you from the list. Once all of the donors and previous Tommy account owners have been transferred or created their new Tommy accounts we will open Tommy for free daily signups again, but it will be a while before that happens. If you're not on the list, and don't want to wait for free signups feel free to make a donation at https://www.heliohost.org/donate/ and let us know the transaction ID. The email address that you donate from will be added to the list, and you will receive your invite when your turn comes. If you have any questions please let us know.

#163815 Node.js

Posted by HelioHost on 09 September 2019 - 03:23 AM

HelioHost is proud to announce that when the Tommy server comes back online we will be offering experimental node.js support. We will be posting a wiki article explaining how to get started with node.js soon. If you're not familiar with what this is check out https://nodejs.org/ We will be running node version 10.16.3 to begin with so make sure your applications are compatible. This is a feature that we've been asked about many times, and we're excited to offer it. Depending on the memory usage and load it puts on the server we may need to restrict the number of accounts that have access to it similar to how we have Tomcat access set up. Since node is really memory hungry we may need to enact memory limitations on each individual node instance as well. Let us know if you have any questions or comments.

#163448 PHP 7.3

Posted by HelioHost on 02 September 2019 - 12:09 PM

We're pleased to announce that we will be supporting PHP 7.3 when the Tommy server comes back online. This is in addition to PHP 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2 that we already offer. Ricky and Johnny will eventually have PHP 7.3 as well when they are upgraded. Keep in mind that the Tommy server isn't currently available for signups, and we will make a news post announcing when user accounts can be created again.

#162801 Reusing Usernames

Posted by HelioHost on 26 August 2019 - 08:00 AM

Our account creation process has been improved.

When you create an account we actually create two accounts for you. One account is the hosting account itself, and the other is a forum account to make getting support easier. The way it worked before was if you deleted your hosting account you wouldn't be able to recreate that same username because your forum account still existed and would block anyone from choosing that username. This meant that you would need to get an admin to change your forum username temporarily before you would be able to recreate your hosting username. This was confusing for users because they would obviously think that since they can't reuse the username it must mean their old account wasn't deleted yet. It also made a lot more work for the admins because we would have to explain all of the above, then rename their forum account, and then rename it back once the new hosting account was created.

Now the account creation process not only allows you to use the same username as a forum account, but actually suggests it if it finds an already existing forum account that matches your email address. This also means that no one else can steal your username while you're in the middle of moving between two servers, because the only way you can have a username that already exists on the forums is if you have access to that email address.

The reason we implemented these changes now is because the Tommy server will be coming back online soon, and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to recreate their accounts. Let us know if you find any bugs or if things aren't behaving the way you would expect.

The scheduled maintenance on Eddie is now complete and everything should be coming back online.

#161842 Backups Available

Posted by HelioHost on 17 August 2019 - 04:22 AM

Tommy backups are now available via https://www.heliohost.org/backup/

We backed up the home directories and mysql databases so far. We're still working on postgresql databases, but very few people use it so the backups are ready for the majority of people. If the backup system doesn't work for you post in customer service, and an admin can help you. If anything is missing from your backup please let us know as soon as possible. We plan on wiping Tommy and installing the new hard drive on August 20th, so you only have four days to figure out if anything is missing. If you let us know that something is missing before we wipe Tommy there is a chance we can find it and back it up for you, but after August 20th it will be gone forever.

#161235 Sparkie Purchased

Posted by HelioHost on 11 August 2019 - 06:09 AM

Between the money we've raised on the gofundme page https://www.gofundme.../sparkie-server and the money that has been donated to us directly through paypal since our fundraiser started in April we've now raised roughly 85% of the money we were asking for. Since we're so close, and since Tommy crashed we figured it's time to buy a new server even though we didn't quite make it to the full goal. You all did an amazing job of donating and we think you deserve a new server as a thank you for your efforts. Sparkie has been purchased and will be shipped to our datacenter next week.

#161148 Tommy Downtime

Posted by HelioHost on 09 August 2019 - 03:34 PM

The good news is Tommy's data is intact. We are currently backing up home directories, mysql, and postgresql databases before we try any further attempts to boot him up. We'll let you know when we have more information.

#158982 Sparkie Inactivity Immunity

Posted by HelioHost on 31 May 2019 - 03:25 PM

You can now earn immunity to your account going inactive by donating to Sparkie!

https://www.gofundme.../sparkie-server

So now if you donate $5 you get double storage space. If you donate $10 you get double storage AND two months before you need to login again to keep your account active. If you donate $15 you get double storage and three months, and so on. If you already donated and received your double storage space we will be going through and handing out inactivity immunity as well soon, but if you'd like to make another donation to get even more inactivity immunity feel free.

Also keep in mind that whoever donates the largest amount will earn themselves a monstrous VPS for six months with 16 GB memory, 8 cpus, 300 GB hard drive space, unlimited bandwidth, a dedicated IPv4 address, and your choice of operating system. That's a $318 value! The current highest donation is $100 so if you donate $101 you could beat him and still save $217 over the price that the VPS would normally cost. Of course, if someone beats you, you're welcome to make another donation to take the lead again. The total of each person's donations will be used to determine whoever donated the most.

Over the last month we've raised $894 towards Sparkie, and another $370 directly through paypal. That brings our total to $1264 which is about 46% of the way to the goal of buying a new server. We're doing great everyone, and we hope to have the new server soon. Thanks!

#157675 HelioHost's Sparkie Server

Posted by HelioHost on 15 April 2019 - 02:18 AM

HelioHost is going to buy a new server named Sparkie!

https://www.gofundme.../sparkie-server

- Anyone who donates $5 or more will have their shared hosting account storage doubled to 2000 MB.

- If you donated during our last fundraiser and already have 2000 MB, another $5 or more donation will increase your storage to 3000 MB.

- Whoever donates the largest amount will win a beast of a VPS for six months with 16 GB memory, 8 cpus, 300 GB hard drive space, unlimited bandwidth, a dedicated IPv4 address, and your choice of operating system. That's a $318 value!

Our servers are getting pretty old and slow so it's time to buy something newer and faster. The server we will be buying has 128 GB memory, and dual xeon processors with a total of 16 cpu cores. This will give us plenty of speed and room to expand our services in the future. We will install our new server, that we're going to name Sparkie, in our cabinet within a professional data center located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately, HelioHost has been losing money for the last few years. We still have enough money in our accounts to last for several more years so you don't need to worry about us shutting down tomorrow, but losing money every year like this isn't sustainable. We've made huge strides over the last few months to reduce our bills. Our projected yearly operating cost is down a whopping 18.87% over last year. We are also now earning 7.57% of our operating costs in the form of VPS sales, and we hope to be able to increase that further as we sell even more VPSes. The rest of our funding comes from ad revenue and donations.

Here's what our finances look like for 2018:
sankeymatic_2018.png

As you can see we lost $1839 in 2018. If we fully finance this fundraiser, not only will be be able to buy our new server, but we'll break even for 2018. Our goal of $2750 includes our 2018 deficit, the cost of the server, the rails, cables, and expected GoFundMe fees. With the addition of Sparkie to our server lineup we will be able to provide free hosting to even more users, and be able to sell even more VPSes. We believe this will allow us to stay afloat for many years to come.

Thanks!

#156232 SFTP Permissions

Posted by HelioHost on 16 February 2019 - 11:35 PM

Some changes have been made to all of the servers to fix the bug that results in all new files being uploaded with 664, and all new directories having 775 permissions. This is an annoyance for users because php especially doesn't like it when files aren't 644. The result of 664 php scripts is a 500 error which can be difficult for inexperienced users to diagnose. The last time we tried to fix this bug it resulted in a lot of other unexpected side effects which were worse than the original issue so since then we've just dealt with it hoping cpanel would eventually fix the issue, but unfortunately the bug still exists even on the latest version. Let us know if you notice anything like SFTP, FTP, file manager, etc. behaving oddly. Hopefully this is the end of the permissions annoyance for good.

#151608 Johnny Maintenance

Posted by HelioHost on 06 August 2018 - 01:29 PM

Since Johnny's uptime has been so poor lately we decided this would be a good time to do some extended maintenance to fix some memory leaks. We are archiving all of the accounts on Johnny to make it easier for users to move to Ricky or Tommy. If you're a donor an admin can move your account for you, or you'll be able to download your archive from our backup system shortly if you want to move your account yourself.

#148850 Johnny's Rebirth

Posted by HelioHost on 31 May 2018 - 11:07 PM

In about an hour we're going to open a limited number of free signups for the new Johnny server. This server is vastly upgraded over the last iteration in every way. Over the next few weeks is an especially good time to create your Johnny account if you want to use Java as the wait time for Tomcat access will start out at several hours on Johnny and will likely skyrocket to several months eventually. We're going to start out with a small number of signups each day and as the system gets fully tested by the first users we'll open it up over the next few weeks with the goal of having 24 hour availability of free signups per day as before. Creating those ridiculous numbers of accounts each day will inevitably result in instability as the server fills up, but we'll do our best to keep the uptime as high as possible. If you want a stable production grade server we still recommend Tommy or Ricky as both of those servers will continue to have limited numbers of new accounts per day. If you have any questions let us know.
