#157675 HelioHost's Sparkie Server

Posted by HelioHost on 15 April 2019 - 02:18 AM

HelioHost is going to buy a new server named Sparkie!

- Anyone who donates $5 or more will have their shared hosting account storage doubled to 2000 MB.

- If you donated during our last fundraiser and already have 2000 MB, another $5 or more donation will increase your storage to 3000 MB.

- Whoever donates the largest amount will win a beast of a VPS for six months with 16 GB memory, 8 cpus, 300 GB hard drive space, unlimited bandwidth, a dedicated IPv4 address, and your choice of operating system. That's a $318 value!

Our servers are getting pretty old and slow so it's time to buy something newer and faster. The server we will be buying has 128 GB memory, and dual xeon processors with a total of 16 cpu cores. This will give us plenty of speed and room to expand our services in the future. We will install our new server, that we're going to name Sparkie, in our cabinet within a professional data center located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately, HelioHost has been losing money for the last few years. We still have enough money in our accounts to last for several more years so you don't need to worry about us shutting down tomorrow, but losing money every year like this isn't sustainable. We've made huge strides over the last few months to reduce our bills. Our projected yearly operating cost is down a whopping 18.87% over last year. We are also now earning 7.57% of our operating costs in the form of VPS sales, and we hope to be able to increase that further as we sell even more VPSes. The rest of our funding comes from ad revenue and donations.

Here's what our finances look like for 2018:

As you can see we lost $1839 in 2018. If we fully finance this fundraiser, not only will be be able to buy our new server, but we'll break even for 2018. Our goal of $2750 includes our 2018 deficit, the cost of the server, the rails, cables, and expected GoFundMe fees. With the addition of Sparkie to our server lineup we will be able to provide free hosting to even more users, and be able to sell even more VPSes. We believe this will allow us to stay afloat for many years to come.

#156232 SFTP Permissions

Posted by HelioHost on 16 February 2019 - 11:35 PM

Some changes have been made to all of the servers to fix the bug that results in all new files being uploaded with 664, and all new directories having 775 permissions. This is an annoyance for users because php especially doesn't like it when files aren't 644. The result of 664 php scripts is a 500 error which can be difficult for inexperienced users to diagnose. The last time we tried to fix this bug it resulted in a lot of other unexpected side effects which were worse than the original issue so since then we've just dealt with it hoping cpanel would eventually fix the issue, but unfortunately the bug still exists even on the latest version. Let us know if you notice anything like SFTP, FTP, file manager, etc. behaving oddly. Hopefully this is the end of the permissions annoyance for good.

#151608 Johnny Maintenance

Posted by HelioHost on 06 August 2018 - 01:29 PM

Since Johnny's uptime has been so poor lately we decided this would be a good time to do some extended maintenance to fix some memory leaks. We are archiving all of the accounts on Johnny to make it easier for users to move to Ricky or Tommy. If you're a donor an admin can move your account for you, or you'll be able to download your archive from our backup system shortly if you want to move your account yourself.

#148850 Johnny's Rebirth

Posted by HelioHost on 31 May 2018 - 11:07 PM

In about an hour we're going to open a limited number of free signups for the new Johnny server. This server is vastly upgraded over the last iteration in every way. Over the next few weeks is an especially good time to create your Johnny account if you want to use Java as the wait time for Tomcat access will start out at several hours on Johnny and will likely skyrocket to several months eventually. We're going to start out with a small number of signups each day and as the system gets fully tested by the first users we'll open it up over the next few weeks with the goal of having 24 hour availability of free signups per day as before. Creating those ridiculous numbers of accounts each day will inevitably result in instability as the server fills up, but we'll do our best to keep the uptime as high as possible. If you want a stable production grade server we still recommend Tommy or Ricky as both of those servers will continue to have limited numbers of new accounts per day. If you have any questions let us know.

#141410 Fundraiser for New Server

Posted by HelioHost on 13 January 2018 - 08:37 PM

HelioHost has created a GoFundMe to purchase a new server. We're going to name this server Lily, and our plan is to begin offering Windows hosting in addition to the Linux hosting we already offer. This will allow us to provide even more features than we already do. If you're interested in getting an account on this new server please donate today.

Also included in this server purchase we will be gaining 8 TB of storage that we can use to increase storage space on our existing accounts. Available harddrive space is really low right now, and as a result we've had to discontinue free account creations on our flagship server, Tommy. If you're interested in getting a Tommy account, or if you want more storage space on your existing Johnny, Ricky, or Tommy account please donate today.

#140818 Whitelist HelioMine

Posted by HelioHost on 05 January 2018 - 05:48 AM

We've noticed that Google Chrome and Windows Defender have started flagging HelioMine as malware on some people's computers. We assure you it is safe and it does exactly what we say it does: downloads a mining assignment and then uses your cpu to mine cryptocurrency for HelioHost. Unfortunately some hackers have hidden similar mining software inside other installers without telling people so some antivirus think that all miners are unwanted now. If we're telling you exactly what it's doing it's clearly not malware, but apparently intent doesn't weigh into these calculations.

Anyways, even if your miner was working fine you may want to check it again in case it has stopped working. In which case you'll need to whitelist it for it to start again. We have uploaded a new version of the installer that should make it easier to whitelist it without getting blocked. So far HelioMine users have earned us over $50. It would be great if we could get even more people mining though, because $50 is a lot, but we need nearly $600 each month to break even. Thanks to all of our donors and all of our miners for helping out.

#140608 Maintenance Complete

Posted by HelioHost on 02 January 2018 - 06:49 PM

We have finished the maintenance on Eddie, and both Tommy and Cody are fully online. However, due to a severe shortage of hard drive space on Tommy we're going to have to temporarily disable free signups.

#138151 War Deploy Improvements

Posted by HelioHost on 26 November 2017 - 04:36 AM

The long awaited, much anticipated upgrade to the java deployment system on Tommy has been released. This update should vastly improve the deployment speeds. Prior to this update java deployments could take up to 24 hours. We estimate that if you change the name of your .war file or if it's a new deployment it could take up to 60 minutes, and if you use the same filename as your previous deployment it could go live in just a couple minutes. Let us know if you have any issues with the new version.

#137009 You Guys Are Awesome

Posted by HelioHost on 01 November 2017 - 04:46 PM

Thank you so much to all of our users! One week ago we needed $273.82 to break even for the month, and we ended up finishing the month of October strong with $252.92 over the cost of operation. That means we raised $526.74 in just one week! This is completely due to the overwhelming show of support that our users displayed after we sent out an email letting everyone know how badly October was going financially. It's really amazing that you all managed to pull this off, and it goes to show that many of you believe in what we're doing. It's obvious that with the much appreciated support of the HelioHost community we will be able to continue providing our services to both our donors, and also the less fortunate who can't donate but still deserve quality world class free hosting. Thanks again.

The reason you're seeing the queued page is probably because you haven't set your nameservers correctly. The proper settings is ns1.heliohost.org and ns2.heliohost.org

#132300 Johnny Mbstring

Posted by HelioHost on 01 August 2017 - 03:29 PM

We will be performing scheduled maintenance starting later this afternoon and running through the night to recompile apache, php, tomcat, and mono on Johnny. The main objective is to re-enable the php mbstring functions. We will also see if we can get asp.net working on Johnny again. This maintenance period is expected to take about 24 hours to complete. During the maintenance you can expect to see more high load spikes and downtime than usual. New account creation will also proceed much slower than usual. Thank you for your patience during this scheduled maintenance.

#126843 Heliohost Finances

Posted by HelioHost on 02 April 2017 - 04:36 AM

HelioHost has decided to be more transparent about our financial situation. The fact of the matter is we're running out of money pretty quickly. It costs us nearly $600.00 USD each month to continue providing great free hosting to people from all around the world. We've been doing this for 12 years now, but the last 2 years we've lost money. The advertising revenue just isn't keeping up with the bills anymore. Rather than slowly dwindle and fade into history we've decided to fight back by buying a new server, and expanding/improving our service. December of 2016 has been our most profitable month in years, and it was because of all of you, our users. We never had any idea that you all could be so generous with your donations.
Thank you so much. It has given us quite a bit of hope and a renewed sense of purpose to continue.
The fact of the matter however, is we've been in the red for quite a while now, and the money we have in our accounts won't keep us operational forever. It is very expensive to operate a webhosting service, and our only sources of income have always been advertising and donations. Not everyone can afford to pay for hosting. We understand. That's why we believe in what we do, but if you're fortunate enough to be able help us stay in business we would really appreciate anything you can spare. We can receive donations via Paypal or Skrill sent to the address admin@heliohost.org.
In order to keep our faithful users updated on our status we've created a new graphic that shows exactly where we stand for the month. If we don't reach our goal we lose money, and we take a step towards going out of business. If we reach the goal by the end of the month we stay in business for at least a month longer. It's as simple as that. If we exceed our goal you can be certain we're going to put all of our profits into providing even better service and maybe even buying more servers in the future. Nobody is getting rich off of HelioHost. We're all volunteers, but we love what we do, and we hope you appreciate what we provide without a price tag.
