HelioHost Posted March 17, 2018 Posted March 17, 2018 Username: coco4, Server: Tommy, Main domain: greifswalder-bachwoche.heliohost.org Dear Heliohost support, We have an account on the Tommy webserver (coco4) and we are using your JSP Tomact server to generate dynamic JSP pages. At first we want to say, we are very grateful that you are offering this service to us and help us out with the webhosting of our internet project. Second, we are facing sometimes issues with our website, not dramatic though. It seems that all of a sudden the WAR archive of our JSP module is no longer being deployed. And we need to trigger the deployment ourselves on the cPanel website once again. For the time in between, the website is no longer available and we get an error message (that the ressource is not available). This happened yesterday the last time (or even the day before yesterday). We know how to fix this (redeploy JSP), but we do not know why this happens. Maybe do you know the reason that our WAR file is no longer deployed on Tomcat? Was it due to a restart of the Tomcat server and was it deactivated manually by you? Thank you in advance for your response! Kind regards Volker
wolstech Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 I know at least one un-deployment was due to a server malfunction that removed Java support and WAR files from every user on Tommy. That issue was corrected, but users did need to redeploy WARs manually after the issue was fixed. As for it disappearing at other times, do you need to re-request Java when this happens, or just redeploy the WAR? If Java needs to be re-requested before you can redeploy, it's probably the server removing it due to nonuse (which can happen even with a deployed WAR if it doesn't have enough traffic). If the WAR is undeploying but you still have Java support, I'd have to get it looked into further.
HelioHost Posted March 19, 2018 Author Posted March 19, 2018 Hello Heliohost support, Thank you for your reply. The un-deployment of the WAR file happened only twice so far (possibly due to the reported server problem). The last time happened last week on 12 march, the first one at the end of last year. In both cases I did not need to request Java support for our account. It was still active after the undeployment. If possible, if this happens another time, could you send a mail to the affected users, so they redeploy the WAR, please? Otherwise the accounts will still be unavailable. Again thank you for your support! Kind regards, Volker Gesendet: Sonntag, 18. wolstech Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 The March 12th one was almost certainly related to the server issue (that's around the time the issue occurred). For the end of last year, that would make sense as well. We had disk trouble on Tommy right around the new year, so something breaking around that time wouldn't be terribly surprising. That disk trouble is the same reason we have low disk space on Tommy and can't offer new Tommy accounts for free at the moment. We had to abandon one of the hard disks attached to Tommy because it started generating errors. After removing the disk, we also discarded all of the archived accounts on Tommy so the server had enough room to function. Tommy currently has about 15GB of space free. The storage hardware we'll be getting from our recent NAS and server fundraiser is our long-term solution to this problem. As for email notifications, we were unaware anyone had a Java issue the first time, hence the lack of notification (we did have an announcement for the server maintenance related to the disk issue). If a global Java malfunction like the recent one happens again, making a public announcement would definitely be a possibility. We try to avoid emails though simply because most users don't want them, and when we do send a mass email, we get a lot of auto-replies, complaints, and even the occasional abuse report. Instead, we post all of our announcements here: https://www.helionet.org/index/forum/1-news/ ...the announcements made there also appear on our Twitter and facebook pages, and you can receive alerts from those platforms if you wish.
