use wordpress + yoast seo, I try to follow the method in yoast

https://yoast.com/help/xml-sitemaps-apache/ but still get an error like

that in GSC. Two days ago I got an HTTP Error: 403 now HTTP Error: 500 on

GSC.

Alright I did some research on Google and I found this guide that it might help you to solved your issue.

Please confirm the following:

1. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?

2. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO Premium, v9.4.1? If you update, does the issue resolve? This guide explains more about how to update: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/

3. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.0.3? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.

4. Can you confirm you add the right variation of your site? It needs be exactly what is shown in the browser. That includes any https and www you may have. If you have NOT added the right variation of your site use this guide: https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/add-website-google-search-console/

5. Can you confirm you have added the right sitemap? It needs to be sitemap_index.xml. This guide explains more: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/submit-sitemap-search-engines/#google

6. Finally, does clearing your caching from your theme, plugin, server, CDN like CloudFlare or browser and resubmitting your sitemaps resolve the issue? If you are not sure how to clear caching from theme/plugin please speak to those authors. If you want to clear cache from the server, please speak to your host provider. To clear the cache from a browser use this guide: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-clear-my-browsers-cache/.

To resubmit sitemaps use this guide: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6065812?hl=en

Let me know if it works or not and I’ll continue to dig some more.

According to the error your site was giving a 500 error when you submitted it to google search console. Your site is working now, so I recommend submitting it again. 500 errors can be caused by a lot of things, but one of them is high load. If the server was experiencing high load when google tried to access your page it could have responded with a 500 error instead of your sitemap. 500 errors are pretty common with wordpress on all of our servers because it uses a lot of memory and causes a lot of load. We strongly recommend not using wordpress for this and many other reasons.
